When most New Year’s resolutions have to do with health, weight loss, habits, and work, it can be difficult to wrap your head around anything else. If you’re in the best shape of your life, what are you resolving to do this coming year? If you are financially, mentally, and physically fit with excellent habits and routine, what do you wish for when the ball drops at midnight? Are these achievements all we could ever ask for?

This year let’s see if we can throw out the old and break the mold with the new.

Instead of Focusing on How You Look…

Instead of focusing on the outside appearances that drive resolutions and goals like weight loss and fitness, focus on the inside like how you feel and your energy level. Resolve to make changes that will change you on the inside:

  • Watch less television
  • Spend less time on your phone
  • Listen to only Christian music for 30 days straight
  • Memorize a verse of scripture per day
  • Say ma’am, sir, please, and thank you
  • Watch a documentary instead of the trending show
  • Start learning a new language
  • Meet your next-door neighbor
  • Bake some cookies for the police officers in your town
  • Connect with someone you rarely see or speak to
  • Cook a home-cooked meal once a week
  • Drink more water every day
  • Go for a walk instead of driving to the gym
  • Find a scenic trail nearby for a hike
  • Pray every morning before you pick up your phone

Instead of Worrying About Finances…

Instead of focusing on where you’ve gone wrong and how to better stretch your finances this year, focus on giving. Resolve to be more generous this year:

  • Support a new charity this year
  • Donate a portion of your own business income this year
  • Share fundraisers on social media (even if you can’t donate yourself)
  • If you cannot donate money, donate your time this year
  • Skip one thing you love every month and donate the money instead
  • Make things yourself instead of buying them

Instead of Giving Up…

Instead of giving up when you slip up this New Year, focus on tomorrow. Resolve to give yourself grace this year:

  • Pray for your efforts, your goals, and your dreams
  • Tell your loved ones your intentions
  • Share your victories and failures with your support system
