For a long time in history, people only had a few choices when it came to travel. We could either ride a quadruped of some kind, row a boat, get driven in a carriage or walk. Walking was accessible to most people. Nowadays there are so many ways to get around: cars, buses, planes, subways… you get the idea.

None of those ways move your body while getting from one place to another. Walking may be the most common way but rollerblading, biking, rolling or skipping are all great ways to get to places that are both enjoyable and have many health benefits. To keep it simple, here is a list of several benefits one can get from getting out and walking.

  1. Reduce risk of diseases. According to the American Heart Association, being physically active for more than 30 minutes a day, five days a week may lower your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
  2. Improve your mood. Walking is an aerobic exercise. These types of exercises have been proven to reduce anxiety and depression. This effect can be multiplied if you go for a walk with someone you know.
  3. Boost your immune function. According to Harvard Health Publishing, walking can help reduce your chances of getting a cold or the flu. One study showed, people who walk at least 20 minutes a day, at least five times a week had 43% fewer sick days than those who walked or exercised only once a week.
  4. Reduce your weight. Going for a brisk 30-minutes can burn 200 calories, depending on your body size and length of walk. Losing excess weight can be beneficial in reducing risk factors associated with heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
  5. Improve your circulation. Walking may help you protect yourself from heart disease by lowering blood pressure and strengthening your heart.
  6. Improve your breathing. Taking large deep breaths of fresh air while outside can both improve your lung strength and increase your vitamin D intake. Sunlight and fresh air are also responsible for improving your mood and improving your body’s immune system.
  7. Strengthen your relationships. People walking together often talk together. Expressing feelings, sharing experiences and bonding on a nice evening walk can really bring people together.

Taking the “shoe lace express” can improve your health in a variety of ways. It’s wise to consult your doctor before going out for a hike through the mountains, or even around your block. It’s also important to remember that not everyone can walk. Yet many of the benefits from walking can be enjoyed by just getting outside and praising God for the life He has given us.
