On Dec. 16, 2022, Mid-America Union’s associate director of communication, Hugh Davis, presented Jesse Campbell from College View Academy in Lincoln, Nebraska, with the inaugural OUTLOOK Student Writers Contest Award. Jesse won a $300 dollar scholarship to be applied to his high school bill and an Amazon gift card. As the winner, he was also featured on the January 2023 cover. In addition, Jesse received framed copies of the cover and his winning article in the presence of his peers before chapel time.

“We were inspired by each of the entries for this contest, and are very pleased to award Jesse with an educational scholarship and gift card,” said Brenda Dickerson, MAUC director of communication. “Our hope is that the contest will be a blessing to many people throughout the Mid-America territory.”

This contest was started in 2022 to help encourage young people to write and provide a space where their voice could be heard. This year’s contest was focused on Adventist education. Students in grades 9-12 were asked to pick a topic about Adventist education such as, Why does it matter? How has it impacted your life? What have you learned that is valuable? How has it connected you to the Adventist Church? How has it helped your relationship with Christ to grow? The entries had to meet certain criteria and were judged by conference communicators from the Mid-America Union territory.

The OUTLOOK team plans on hosting this contest again during the 2023-2024 school year and looks forward to students from throughout the territory participating.
