We are justified by God when we come to Him for forgiveness and cleansing. This used to happen symbolically in the outer court of God’s earthly sanctuary, where a sacrificial animal was killed, and hands were washed in the laver.
The next compartment of the sanctuary is the Holy Place, and it is here that we discover ways to be sanctified, or made holy. Since we are so close to the period of glorification in the Most Holy Place, when we are taken to heaven to be near the throne of God, let’s take a serious look at our sanctification in the Holy Place.
First, we will want to pray at the altar of incense. It is only through prayer, when we have surrendered and offer ourselves to God, that we are equipped to take on other duties that God requires of us. When we pray, it’s like having a phone conversation with God. Video chats and other face-to-face meetings will have to wait till we get to heaven. But for now we can speak to Him, and at times, we can even hear His voice speaking to us, through the intimate prayer conversations we enjoy. We offer ourselves this way to be His servant–to serve Him in whatever capacity He desires. Through daily prayer, God provides us with a renewed breath of life that is like the air we breathe–so necessary for our survival.
Then, there’s the table of showbread in the Holy Place. To partake of God’s Bread of Life, we need only open our Bible and study the Word. Jesus is the Word made flesh, so studying His word gives us the nourishment necessary to be His disciple. Instead of a phone conversation, we are treated to a letter. We are sure to hear God’s voice in the Holy Scriptures, when we have prayed for understanding of its contents. Study to show yourself approved by God, we are told in 2 Timothy 2:15. This is how we become a disciple, or student of God.
Finally, we come to one of the most beautiful articles of tabernacle furniture, the seven-branched, golden lampstand. Jesus has given us life, spiritual wisdom, and now He gives us energy to be a light to the world. We are commanded to let His light shine out to others. As we minister to those around us, reflecting His love for lost humanity, we become missionaries, ambassadors who glorify God and vindicate His name before the entire universe.
As you can see, all three of these components work together to make us holy and sanctified in God’s sight. We should never stop praying, studying, and shining for God. He can work through us, when we work for Him.
Who and where are you in God’s Holy Place? Use your time there wisely.
