Team Creation Kids Camp, a mobile Vacation Bible School ministry, spent another summer taking the gospel directly to families’ doorsteps in apartment complexes, neighborhoods and parks across Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and beyond — reaching hundreds of children through games, Bible-based lessons, and door-to-door prayer.
The ministry launched in 2020 as a partnership between the Iowa-Missouri Conference and NC4Y (New Change For Youth Church), born out of necessity when COVID-19 closed doors to traditional outreach.
“The idea of a mobile vacation Bible school, really a mini evangelistic series for children and for their families right in the area where they’re at outdoors, was born,” said Elisabeth Cowan, Kids Camp coordinator.
What began as an experiment now welcomes between 400 and 500 children each year, with volunteers knocking on roughly 900 doors each summer to invite families to attend.
Unlike a traditional VBS held inside a church building, Team Creation meets people where they already are. Program materials describe it as “not just a one-week event — it is a relational ministry model,” meant to help churches and schools build lasting community connections rather than a single week of activity.
Volunteers, most of them high school and college age, said the approach opens doors that a church building often can’t.
Team members described watching families move from curious bystanders to committed church members, as kids’ enthusiasm draws in parents who begin attending church themselves.
